So do some mockups? Aside from a few toolbar rearrangements, I'm happy with Beersmith's layout.
And the real irony is that calibre does in fact have a bookshelf view and flip-cover view and whatever else, but thankfully that's not the main view or the default.Īs long as the app follows platform conventions (looking at you, Apple, with your iTunes on Windows that uses MacOS interaction patterns that are foreign concepts to Windows users) and doesn't require weird or unintuitive interaction patterns, and as long as the view presents the data in the most logical way for that data, I don't care if the app is "ugly".

For example, one of the two main complaints about ebook management software calibre is that it's "not pretty", by which people mean, "It's not presented as a faux bookshelf with book covers on the shelf." Instead it's presented as a table of data, because that's exactly how you'd expose the information from a database, which it ultimately is. It's a common complaint about lots of applications, and it's ridiculous. If you try to simplify the interface, you will inevitably either get rid of vital interactivity or create more convoluted and complex navigation patterns to do the same thing you used to be able to do in 1-2 clicks. People just don't like that kind of interface anymore, which is frustrating because it's the perfect interface for a complex piece of software like Beersmith. No, it does not work well with a touch interface (caveat: I don't use the mobile app, but I would assume that this does work well with touch, else it would be worthless). Yes, it's a forms-based application with a bunch of boxes and buttons with very high information density. And what they mean by that is that it's not the familiar smooth, information-sparse web-based interface everybody's gotten used to since Web 2.0 took off. Yeah, everybody rags on Beersmith for having a "bad" UI, but what they really mean by that is "not pretty" (I won't call it ugly!).
